Mudpuppys
Necturus Maculosus
The Mudpuppy is the only salamander that spends its entire life under water. Adults are brown, and other dark colors. Young Mudpuppys have yellow lines on their bodys. This four toed creature has bright red gills.
The Mudpuppy is the largest salamander in Minnesota. It reaches lengths of twelve to sixteen inches. Mudpuppys are found as far north as the Minnesota/Canada border. Mudpuppys can be found in lakes of all sizes, rivers, and some ponds.
Mudpuppies like muddy floors of their habitat, but they have been found in ponds that had gravel for a floor. They are active all year long, even in lakes covered with ice. They lay eggs in groups of fifty to a hundred.
Newborns are an inch long. Mudpuppys eat: fish, worms, slugs, insects, other salamanders, and anything else that moves. Not much is known about the mudpuppy, some people say that it is venomous, but that has not been found out yet for sure.
Because not much is known about the mudpuppy, I dont suggest that people touch them, pick them up, or make them pets.
