Disappearing Act
Where Do Your Music Videos Go?
What happened to my music videos?
It seems like the world of music television has turned into a different dimension. After dinner and studying, I turn on MTV and what do I see? Anything that does not have anything to do with music videos. I agree that shows like The Real World and Singled Out have their appeal, but I want music videos, dammit! VH1 does a little better in providing music videos during the afternoon and prime-time, but its late-night programming consists of nothing except infomercials. If you have trouble sleeping at 3 a.m., VH1 is the channel to watch to put you right to sleep.
Answering this dilemma, MTV introduced M2 about six months ago. M2 is a cable channel that plays music videos 24 hours a day. Although not many cable stations carry it, this channel is gaining popularity. Getting air time on the orginal MTV channel in one-hour segments, it has proved to be "interesting." M2 follows the Forrest Gump philosophy... M2's videos are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. The videos range from the low-budget B-sides to the video breakthoughs to the classics.
One problem I have with M2 is the uncertainty. I, personally, would hate to sit around for an hour watching really bad videos until a decent one finally plays. But that's solely because I am impatient. When I want something, I want it NOW.... But if you want to get exposed to all the different styles of music out there, M2 is definitely a plus. Indie bands and underground techno bands really get their share of the pie on this channel.
