Has Willis found his niche?

It was probably just a coincidence that Bruce Willis ended up in another sci-fi film so soon after his role in "12 Monkeys."

Then again, maybe the safest place to play his macho roles nowadays is in the very dangerous future, as in "The Fifth Element."

Are Willis's tough-guy characters appreciated now the way they used to be? Probably not in general, though Willis and a few other choice actors can still draw a crowd by taking on legions of bad guys with little more than a pocket knife and their wits. Willis has done it through three "Die Hard" films with a fourth on tap for next year.

But the more memorable roles I've seen from him recently have been the two sci-fi films. It's the same kind of character as the "Die Hard" roles, but they're both more interesting than the other things he's done recently.

I'm not sure what "The Jackel" will be like, but it looks like more of the sneering tough guy stuff. Although this time he'll be playing the bad guy for a change -- fairly rare in Bruce's career.

But considering the lack of success of "Last Man Standing," and "Color of Night, " maybe it's wise for Bruce to leave the planet every once in a while.
