Orson Scott Card
Storyteller of the Ages

Considered a major force in today's science fiction, Orson Scott Card's work always leaves the reader's mind staggering with mixtures of exciting possibilities and dreadful realities. Many Hugo and Nebula Awards adorn his SF titles (such as Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead), but his work extends well past tales set within distant universes. Card has accomplished what many others continually struggle to do; he has established his talents outside of a singular genre and made his mark across the spectrum.

Fans of his science fiction are often surprised to find that some of his stellar successes are based on points of real history, especially that surrounding Joseph Smith and the experiences of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 19th century America. Understanding this makes his stretches into historical fiction (Saints) and other Mormon-based fiction (Folk of the Fringe) all the more intriguing. Beyond these categories, Card's work has appeared in the form of numerous short stories, articles, essays, horror novels, non-fiction works, scripting work for stage and video, and screenplays. Keep an eye on your neighborhood theater for Ender's Game the movie, for which Card is currently laboring over the screenplay.

Many writers online, like myself, owe him a debt of gratitude for his efforts to nurture blooming talent. Through his publishing company, he has launched such authors as Kathryn H. Kidd, his first co-author for the fascinating novel Lovelock. Hatrack's Writers Groups are divided into two categories, for writers over the age of 18 and for youth writers under the age of 18. The elder group is run by Kathleen Dalton-Woodbury, whose own by-mail workshops have benefited numerous authors throughout the world of writing.

Card continues to bless readers across the globe with his vast array of imaginative tales. The fact that he also chooses to give back to those writers who only dream of having such success is something that should speak highly to anyone, reader or writer.
