And It Started Out to Be A Simple Excavation....
I have been gone on a busman's holiday to the wilds of southern Arizona. We were asked to do some basic excavations of two nineteenth century houses that were going to be impacted by a road. The landowner agreed to pay for our expenses and stipends as well.
Everything was going along just fine until the landowner pointed out an area in which he had seen some ash deposits and asked us to do a few backhoe trenches there (backhoe trenching is common on prehistoric sites in the Southwest although we usually don't use such techniques on historic sites).
So we did a few trenches. Voila! We discovered a prehistoric Hohokam village complete with pithouses and other features. Of course, the discovery was made on the next to last day of the project, so we have had to extend the project to this week as well.
Some of the artifacts that have been recovered include a funerary projectile point (unused), decorated and plain ceramics, and many stone tools and flakes.
Next week, I will discuss what happens when we hit a burial. (I can't discuss it this week, because I need to meet with the Arizona Repatriation Coordinator.)
